As the US government through the Customs and Border Protection continues to ease restrictions on the entry of Malawian tobacco into the US government; on 31st July 2020, Limbe Leaf Tobacco Company was given a go ahead to resume exporting tobacco into the US, making it the second company to get a WRO relief after Alliance One Tobacco Company Limited.

This decision was taken after a careful evaluation and scrutiny to ensure that tobacco by the said company was not produced under child/forced labour conditions.

This move by CBP is a relief to all stakeholders in the industry including the Tobacco Commission and grower associations that described it as good news as meant that Tobacco from Malawi will continue being exported to the US.

The US holds about 8% of the export market for tobacco from Malawi.
