His Excellency the State President Professor Bingu wa Mutharika, on Monday 26th March, officially opened the 2012 Tobacco Marketing season. This was marked by presiding over the first tobacco sale at Lilongwe Auction Floors.
After presiding over the sale, His Excellency addressed a rally where he acknowledged the growers for bringing to auction tobacco which was well-taken care of. The president also advised the growers to always take good care of their tobacco so that the buyers can offer the good prices.
The President also advised and pleaded with the buyers to at least offer the growers good prices. He reminded the buyers of how the growers strive to grow the crop and the costs which the growers incur especially with these economic hardships. He also advised the growers to refrain from using children as workers in tobacco fields.
It is a known fact that most growers use children to work for them in tobacco estates and farms. The president warned those that are still employing children that according to Malawi government laws, child labour is worth prosecution.
